Services & Offices



Academic Advising

Champlain College places a high priority on student advising and considers it an integral part of the College experience. The advising process is designed to help students make important decisions related to their academic programs at Champlain.

New students are assigned a Student Success Advisor from the Registrar’s Office. They help students transition to their new life at Champlain College.  They set goals, develop plans to achieve them, and connect them with relevant resources and services. Their role includes first and second semester academic advising, and can also extend to non-academic areas like personal development and early career exploration.

Returning students are assigned a faculty advisor within a program division with whom they work to establish academic and professional goals and to select their courses for upcoming semesters.  

Any student interested in studying abroad can get advice through the Champlain Office of the Registrar.  Student Success Advisors are additional staff in the Registrar’s Office who assist all students in understanding their program evaluations and the requirements for graduation. They work closely with faculty advisors and program directors and are knowledgeable about the curriculum requirements for each program. They also assist students with registration processes and make referrals to College resources, as needed.

 

Academic Support

Effective academic support outside the classroom can be as vital to academic success as what happens inside the classroom. Champlain College provides a range of academic support services designed to help students meet their educational and career goals. Students can easily access academic coaching and tutoring services for Programming, Mathematics, and Writing in their main location on the 2nd floor of Miller Information Commons (MIC). Other tutoring centers (Game Design, Game Art, Cybersecurity, and Digital Forensics) are housed in satellite locations on campus.

Academic Coaching  

Champlain’s professional academic coaches work with students in individual and group sessions on areas such as self-advocacy, goal-setting, motivation, mindfulness, and executive function skills (time-management, organizational strategies, study strategies, test preparation, and reading comprehension skills). Many students meet weekly or bi-monthly with individual coaches; others come on an as-needed basis. Peer Tutoring Centers

Champlain supports several centers staffed by trained students who provide content tutoring in the most high demand areas including: Programming, Math, Writing, Cybersecurity and Networking, Digital Forensics, and Game Studio. All tutors are recommended by faculty and complete training to become Certified Tutors through our national accreditor, The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Online Tutoring Through BRAINFUSE

Champlain contracts with Brainfuse to provide real-time online tutoring to students, available on a 24/7 basis. Brainfuse tutors are teachers with advanced degrees who offer live, on-demand support for math, business, writing, sciences, programming, and technology. Brainfuse also offers a range of tutorials. Students can access Brainfuse online using their Champlain email credentials.

Academic Recovery Program

The ReSet Program is for students who return on Academic Recovery status. The program allows students on Academic Recovery to choose their option for support (individual coaching or a facilitated group) in addition to the requirements set out by the Dean of their division. The focus for both individual coaching and the facilitated group is goal setting, strengths assessment, time management, and how actions impact academic performance. The goal of this program is to ensure each student has access to the tools that will create academic success.

Campus Store

The campus store offers all required textbooks and course materials, as well as school and art supplies. There is also a wide selection of convenience items available, such as local coffee, snacks, drinks, stamps, and health and beauty products. The campus store offers a variety of exclusive Champlain College merchandise (t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, drinkware, and more). For a wider merchandise selection, shop online at ChamplainGear.com. Suggestions for new items are always welcome.

With affordability in mind, the campus store proudly offers their Best Price Promise on textbooks, matching any price found anywhere else.. We encourage you to obtain your books through the campus store to receive the best service, the correct book, and the best price. Students who order their books from other sources will not be eligible for tuition refunds if those books arrive late and jeopardize their ability to begin their coursework.

The cheapest option for obtaining your books is typically renting your books, as rental prices can be up to 80%-off the purchase price. Rental books must be returned in reusable condition by the last day of finals each semester. Filling out a one-time rental registration (in-store or online) will allow you to continue to rent textbooks throughout your Champlain experience. A credit card is required as collateral when filling out your rental registration.

We highly recommend ordering online at ChamplainCampusStore.com once your course schedule is set. Online orders can be shipped to your home, or you can select free in-store pickup and have the books waiting for you when you arrive on campus.  For in-store pickups, you must bring your ID and/or emailed order confirmation. A separate line will be formed for in-store pickup orders to help you avoid the longer lines at the registers. Ordering your books early will give you a better chance of reserving cheaper, used copies before they run out of stock.

When placing an online order, you may see as many as five options for each of your required course materials, including renting or purchasing new, used, and digital texts. All options can be ordered online or in-store. During the first two weeks of class, all course materials can be refunded or exchanged with receipt and in the same condition as when they were obtained.

For those who prefer to get their books in-store, please bring your student ID with you, so that the store team can assist you with locating your course materials. The textbooks are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. You can visit txbk.info/champlain to retrieve your list of required books sorted by author’s last name.

At the end of the semester, please bring your rented books directly back to the campus store by the last day of finals. While you can attempt to sell books to the campus store on any day, you will usually receive the best value during finals week.

Campus Dining Options

Champlain Dining Services, operated by Sodexo Campus Services, offers two dining locations on campus. A retail food court called EATS Dining and Lounge in the CCM Building and IDX Dining Hall located in the IDX Student Life Center, both open to all students. 

Residential students participate in the College’s Carte Blanche Unlimited meal plan at the IDX Dining Hall by simply presenting their ID card to the cashier.  All residential student meal plans allow for unlimited access to IDX Dining. The Carte Blanche Unlimited meal plan also includes $150 in residential flex dining each semester for use at EATS. Additional flex dining dollars can be purchased online. The Carte Blanche Unlimited Meal Plan and Flex are not refundable and expire at the end of the school year.

Off-campus, 194 Saint Paul Street residents and commuter students may purchase a choice of block plans, for 30, 50 or 100 meals at IDX Dining with additional flex dollars for use at EATS.

EATS and IDX Dining also accept cash, credit card and Champlain Cash card.

Compass Student Services

Compass Student Services is the one-stop shop for any question about the business of being a student. We provide personalized communication, connections and education from orientation through graduation. Compass is dedicated to being student focused, awesomely approachable and a leader in everything we do.

Compass is located in Perry Hall, first floor. We are open Monday-Friday from 9 am-4:30 pm (4 pm Tuesdays).  Students can reach Compass by email at compass@champlain.edu or by phone at 802-992-1474. 

Counseling Center

Confidential counseling services are available at no cost to all matriculated students. Counselors at the Counseling Center can help students with concerns including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, alcohol and drug use, physical or sexual abuse, relationship concerns, stress management, sexuality, and crisis management. The counselors provide guidance on accessing appropriate resources, including information about local emergency services, reporting options, and community support.

The counselors are available to guide students through various crises. They can provide support by connecting students with appropriate resources for psychological emergencies, including information about local hospital services. In cases involving sexual or physical assault, counselors can offer information about reporting options, including local police departments and family court procedures. Counselors are equipped to help students navigate campus systems and community agencies, ensuring students understand available resources while empowering them to access these services independently.

Through the services of our psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP), students with more significant mental health needs can be medically evaluated and treated. The psychiatric nurse practitioner works closely with the counselors, and is skilled at diagnosing and treating mental health issues, including prescribing medication when indicated.

Counselors will make referrals to community resources when appropriate and/or if the treatment recommendation is beyond the Counseling Center’s scope of practice. Prevention and education are important components of the Counseling Center. Programming is offered throughout the year.

Dean of Students

The Dean of Students is committed to helping all students at Champlain College to reach their fullest potential. The Dean provides a variety of student support services and specialized resources.

The Dean of Students works closely with the Academic Deans and oversees various student services areas including: Community Standards, Counseling Center, and the Student Health Center. The Dean of Students serves as the central lead contact for students of concern and co-chairs the Care Team.  The Dean also collaborates with other colleagues on student wellness initiatives.

Through our Care Team, the Dean of Students works to ensure that students have the proactive assistance and support they need by coordinating the assessment, evaluation and response to reports about students in crisis or who present concerning behavior. By connecting these students with support to manage their academic and social experience at the College, the Dean of Students supports individual students. Anyone can fill out a Care Team referral by using the referral form on the team’s website.

Library Services

The Champlain College library is housed in the Robert E. & Holly D. Miller Information Commons (MIC) and provides research and information services for the College communityThe library provides access to books, periodicals, online journals, e-books and audiovisual materials, as well as  laptops, chromebooks, drawing tablets and other items for checkout. In addition to providing a wide variety of resources, the library is home to a team of faculty librarians ready to help you with your research and information literacy and research instruction sessions in the classroom. The MIC houses computer labs, work stations, and quiet study rooms for individual or group student use.

Military and Veterans Services

Veterans and Military Services Office

The Veterans and Military Services Office provides education benefit counseling and ongoing support to students who are service members, veterans, and their dependents. The office offers several key services:

  • Counseling for VA and military education benefits, including benefits extended to dependents and spouses. 

  • Coordinating benefit certification and processing across military and VA education benefit platforms

  • Managing VA financial processing to ensure benefits are being certified and provided in a timely manner

  • Helps troubleshoot issues with VA and military education benefits

  • Acts as an advocate for military personnel and veterans online and on campus

  • Coordinating services with VA Veteran Readiness and Employment Counselors for vocational rehabilitation

  • Serves as a liaison across multiple departments to streamline services to service members, veterans, and their dependents.

Office of Accessibility

The Office of Accessibility is a resource for students, faculty, and staff that leads the campus community in its commitment to recognize disability as a valued aspect of diversity that is integral to the campus community and society, to embrace access as a matter of social justice, and to design welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environments. The Office of Accessibility facilitates accommodations, training, collaboration, and innovative programming.

The Office of Accessibility works to help Champlain College design barrier-free environments to the extent possible. If some barriers to access cannot be removed in a timely manner, the Office of Accessibility will work one-on-one with students to determine reasonable accommodations. This requires the student to actively engage in the interactive process with the Office of Accessibility and, when needed, with faculty.

We believe that creating and maintaining usable, equitable, and inclusive learning environments is a shared responsibility of the campus community. We work with professors to design learning environments with usability in mind which benefits all students and increases access for all. Our goal is to enable students with disabilities to access their environments as seamlessly as non-disabled students.

The Office of Accessibility will assist Champlain College to make reasonable accommodations for an otherwise qualified student or applicant for admission. The accommodations that students use are put in place to ensure equal access, not success. Students with disabilities are held to the same standard of academic achievement as all other students. 

Champlain College students seeking academic accommodations, housing accommodations, dietary accommodations, parking accommodations, and/or permission to have an emotional support animal on campus must register with the Office of Accessibility.  It is the responsibility of the student to provide the documentation, meet with the appropriate staff, and request their accommodations. For academic accommodations, students must request that their letter of accommodation be provided to faculty members each semester (the Office of Accessibility does not share student information without the student’s consent).

Temporary or Short-Term Accommodations

There may be times when a temporary impairment would necessitate the need for College support and/or accommodations, e.g. broken bones, recovering from surgery, etc. The type of impairment, degree of limitations to major life functions, and duration of the impairment may be such that it requires short-term accommodations such as those used by students with disabilities. Office of Accessibility services may include: access to physically accessible classrooms and residence halls, access to assistive technology, note-taking and/or exam accommodations, accessible transportation resources, and/or temporary disability parking.

In some cases, receiving support from the Dean of Students may be more appropriate. For example, if a student needs to leave campus for a prolonged period of time for surgery and/or medical procedures, the student should contact the Dean of Students.

Accommodation Appeals and Grievance Process

Consistent with the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Champlain College determines disability accommodations through a deliberative, interactive process involving disability services professionals and the individual students themselves. 

However, a student may disagree about the appropriateness of an accommodation decision as part of the deliberative process. Often, further dialogue between the parties, or obtaining more documentation, can lead to effective solutions. However, students retain the right to appeal decisions made by the Office of Accessibility.

Informal Appeal Process

The Director of the Office of Accessibility (or designee) will review any written appeals and the students’ files. The Director may meet with students to discuss their requests. To reach a decision, the Director may also ask for more disability documentation, ask to consult with treating healthcare providers, or collaborate with other faculty/staff or outside experts (only with the student’s permission). Review processes are conducted in a timely manner. Students will receive a written response from the Office of Accessibility upholding or rescinding accommodation decisions generally within ten business days of the written appeal (may be dependent upon review of additional documentation and/or correspondence with healthcare provider(s)).

If the student disagrees with the outcome determined by the Director or is unsatisfied with the Informal Appeals Process, they can submit written notice to the Director of the Office of Accessibility of their decision to continue with the Formal Appeal Process.

Formal Appeal Process

  1. Appeals of decisions made through the Informal Appeal Process regarding the determination or provision of accommodations or auxiliary aids and services must be in writing. Students should initiate the appeal process within five business days of receiving the decision of the Informal Appeals Process.

  2. Ideally, the student’s written statement should include a) a clear statement of the request or concern; b) the grounds on which the appeal is based; c) the date of any action that the student is appealing; d) the names of all Champlain College employees involved; e) a summary of the action(s) the student has taken to resolve the matter informally if any; and f) a statement of the student’s expectation of specific outcome.

  3. The written appeal must be submitted to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

  4. The final decision shall be provided to the student and the Office of Accessibility within ten business days.

  5. The determination is final and cannot be appealed within the College.

Office of Community Standards

The Office of Community Standards promotes student learning and holistic development by helping to create a campus culture of respect, civility, and responsibility. We strive to create opportunities for students to respect the dignity of all members of the Champlain community, to respond with honesty and integrity, and to accept responsibility for their actions. 

We endeavor to strike a balance between the needs of an individual student and the Champlain community. We believe graduates of Champlain College will take this learning with them into the workplace as engaged global citizens.

Hearing Officers facilitate meetings to discuss alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct, hear student perspectives, explore personal responsibility, hold students accountable and provide educational and restorative outcomes.

The Office of Community Standards also reviews reports as they arrive through the Incident Reporting Form found in the Champlain online portal. These reports are then forwarded on to the appropriate resources on campus. Office of Diversity and Inclusion

Champlain College’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), located in the IDX Student Life Center, aims to create a welcoming, celebrating, and affirming environment for all students. The ODI works in collaboration with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to co-create and sustain a rich campus community. 

The ODI delivers programming with an emphasis on community, inclusion, and belonging. Programs such as Education Empowerment and AHEAD promote curricular success. Social events such as film screenings, book clubs, and educational luncheons promote community building and student identity development in a safe and inclusive environment.

Office of International Student Services

The Office of International Student Services (OISS) is the international student and scholar “home away from home” and provides direct specialized services to all international students, exchange visitors, and exchange scholars through immigration/academic advising, cultural adjustment education, outreach, and programming. 

OISS also supports the College’s overall international education strategy/goals, coordinates institutional immigration compliance, and plays a central role in the College’s international student and scholar recruitment strategy and the international student admissions/enrollment process.

Lastly, OISS supports visiting international faculty and other international visitors to campus.

Student Health Center

The Student Health Center offers a variety of primary care and acute care services, including treatment for infections, illnesses, injuries, chronic health issues, medication management, screening and prevention, and more, to all degree-seeking students. It is staffed by Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. The health center is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call, email, or walk in to schedule an appointment.

Notification of Illness: You are responsible for reporting serious illness or hospitalization to your parents or legal guardians; you should not assume that anyone else will notify them. 

It is also your responsibility to notify your instructors of any illness that interferes with your schoolwork and to arrange to make up any classes or assignments that you miss. The Student Health Center cannot excuse you from class. 

In the event of a serious illness, the Student Health Center and Counseling Center, will help contact faculty to make appropriate plans to support your continued academic success. The staff in the Student Health Center will also work with your healthcare providers in coordinating your treatment and recovery to the extent appropriate given the nature and scope of the College’s residential and academic programs.

Insurance: When you were billed for admission to Champlain College, you received information detailing the provisions of a College-sponsored insurance plan. If you participate in this group policy and wish to make a claim,   it should be submitted as soon as possible after the onset of any illness, accident or injury that requires medical attention beyond that provided by Champlain College.. Keep in mind, however, that the college-sponsored plan is a secondary insurance policy that is to be used only after you submit a claim through your or your parents’ primary policy.

Services provided within the Student Health Center are free of charge. Care referred outside of the Health Center can incur a fee and result in your insurance being billed. This includes labs sent to an outside laboratory for processing, prescriptions sent to a pharmacy, and referrals for imaging and to specialist providers.

Student Resources

The Office of Student Resources is committed to working closely with students who are seeking resources and needing encouragement as they work toward completing their degree. Student Resources staff coach students in identifying barriers to academic success and exploring possible solutions or manageable plans to address those barriers. The office works to connect students with resources to support a successful degree-seeking experience.

Student Resources staff provide on-campus support to help students navigate resources both on campus and in the local community. The office works in close collaboration with other Champlain College departments, government and community agencies to ensure students have access to all possible resources.  

Student Resources supports all students, however, focuses primarily on students who are:

  • Single and parenting students;

  • Living off-campus and commuting;

  • Recipients of federal, state, and/or college specific scholarships; 

  • Experiencing a financial emergency;

  • Referred by the Care Team or other campus partner.

Common challenges addressed by the office include but are not limited to:

  • Problem solving and planning for academic success;

  • Navigating college life;

  • Financial concerns;

  • Food insecurity;

  • Connections to resources on & off campus (housing, state benefits, childcare, diaper bank, food assistance, etc.);

  • Parenting student well-being.

Support services provided include:

  • One-time or ongoing non-clinical case management; 

  • A positive and encouraging connection with support staff for students;

  • Referrals for off campus resources;

  • Managing the Single Parents Program;

  • Coordinating the emergency fund for students experiencing financial emergencies;

  • Collaborating with other departments to offer orientation programs focused on student success;

  • Managing the on-campus food security resource, Chauncey’s Cupboard;

  • Managing the on-campus free thrift store, Chauncey’s Closet;

  • Active member of the Care Team.

Studying Abroad

Champlain College is committed to developing global citizenship to support our students’ understanding about how our world is interconnected. Our goal is to guide you through academic experiences that will expand your perspective and help every student achieve global and cultural understanding through study abroad.

Most students apply during the fall of their sophomore year to study abroad for a semester during their junior year at one of our own programs in Dublin, Ireland or Montreal, Canada, designed specifically for Champlain students. Students can also study abroad through third-party programs worldwide.

Studying abroad at one of our programs costs approximately the same as living and eating on campus in Burlington. Many students complete internships and other professional experiences while abroad, which develop real-world skills. Our office helps students align their academics, professional goals, finances and other considerations for a successful study abroad experience.

Additionally, Champlain College offers several summer programs, faculty-led courses, and Champlain-sponsored trips to international destinations.

Women’s and Gender Center

The Women’s and Gender Center (WGC) provides a comfortable, inclusive, and fun place for students to hang out, meet new friends, and have meaningful conversation. Students of all gender identities and sexual orientations are welcome to call this place home. The WGC also facilitates educational and supportive programming around three major themes: Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Development, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation, and Sexual Violence Awareness & Prevention.

The Center collaborates across the institution to bring important conversations and events to campus, such as gender identity and pronoun training for staff and faculty, Women’s History Month programming, and conversations on consent. Primary areas of focus are educational programming, advocacy, affinity space, and human connection and support. While many of our services and programs are geared towards students with non-dominant gender identities and/or sexualities, our center and programming are available for all students to learn and grow together in an inclusive environment.
